Beautiful Konkan region of Karnataka

Recommended Posts

Finally I did a good trip in my new car with family and did a decent  amount of miles which was quite an adventure due the flood warning at mangalore , zero visibility warning at chikmangalur.

Route:

Hyderabad-Chikmangalur-Dharmasthala-mangalore-Udupi-murdeswar-kumta-hyderabad.

We had our stay booked for 2 nights at chikmangalur,1 night  at mangalore,3 nights at kumta.

Chikmanglur Stay: Treebo Sunrise (9/10) but one staff named Dharani was just outstanding.

Mangalore Stay:Treebo Pappilo palace(3/10). Bad staff, bad rooms.

Kumta stay: Blue ocean sands (8/10) isolated place near beach. It was isolated due to weekdays but when we were checking out on Saturday we saw the crowd coming in. The place was very peaceful and I like peaceful places

Car:Jeep Compass Deisel Limited.

Total distance 2291.6

Mileage:16.2

Day1 :: Towards chikmangalur

I had two route options to take one was a diversion from Ananthpur which looked short and the other one was through Hassan highway towards chikmangalur.

Enroute saw that KIA motors factory was in full swing .

Reached a decent hotel called treebo sunrise at chikmangalur by 7pm.

it was raining cats and dogs in chikmangalur when we reached.So roaming anywhere in such heavy rain after sunset was not recommended by the hotel staff so we just walked around the city with raincoats and umbrellas .

Day2 ::

We got up early to watch the sunrise from baba budan or mullayangiri. But we were stopped at the checkpoint citing no visibility in the ghat section and was asked to come once the rain comes down. We tried out luck at 10 am and were allowed in.Then the amazing greenery with a bit of drizzle while going up to mullayangiri was just heaven.Unfortunately right after 30 min rain fall was super heavy and driving up the hill became tough.

Then we drove down with lot of difficulty due to slipping surface . The vehicles were stopped at the check post again .

So we through it going other way to bababudan peak as once we go out of the checkpost we may not be let in.

But saw the below and figured that I was the only one on this route and decided to turn back and out as it was becoming dark at 3 pm 😡😳🤔

Drove around the beautiful city and checked out some places and headed back to the hotel.

Day3 ::

Kemmangudi and local temples was on my list for the day and some pics from that day .

Did some local site seeing and again drove around the city where there was no traffic and only rainfall and the smell of earth was there. Mind you that the temperature was around 14 degrees.

Rest of the day we were discussing the options and best way to reach mangalore . Shiradi ghat was closed since Jan-2018 and would open around July after the renovation work so the only option wasn’t charmadi ghat Which was not in a great condition because that was the only current route towards mangalore (with trucks,buses,cars,etc etc)

Day4 ::

Accepted to challenge the rain and weather and headed towards Dharmasthala temple through Charmadi ghat. The drive was not at all easy and the curves were filled with broken roads, potholes.Way too many buses and trucks were there.

But of course the visuals onto my right and left were just amazing.

Spent time at Udipi temple and Malpe beach (really beautiful) from 12 to 3pm.

Stopped at murdeswar for around 90 min and reached Kumta at 7:30 pm .

The entire road from mangalore towards kumta was under construction with Toll Booths being constructed as well. For sure after an year this entire stretch is going to be lovely awesome 😎.

Day7&8 :

We did not take accommodation in Gokarna and instead stayed at Blue Ocean Sands resort at Kumta .Walkable from the beach thought felt isolated at the resort as being a weekday there were no folks at the resort .I would give 6/10 to the resort but 10/10 to the staff. Some pics below from the beaches in Kumta, gokarna.Gokarna we spent more time at OM beach as there was hardly any crowd and it was very peaceful.We went to a God forbidden 🚫 beach called kudle which lacked sense of cleanliness, filled with garbage,liquor bottles, plastic covers and even dead dogs.Then I am told that locals and shack owners would get the beach cleaned around August end as business would be there from August to March.0DBE1391-EB23-48C2-80BA-787B1314C285.jpeg.bc8a39abf31befdb3be482abdb3c2ed3.jpeg

Had to go through another forest ghat which was beautiful and very pleasant as it had rained previous night.

Once that forest drive was over the entire stretch till Raichur highway was a nightmare with very bad roads , animals and people walking across the roads as they do in their gardens.

Reached home at around 7 pm.

Jeep managed very well except at one muddy swamp where the left front and left rear wheel was 50% deep in mud.

The only place where i had escaped the rain was in Kumta beaches..

It was a bad timing but the drive was excellent.

I am planning to go again and check out chikmanglur properly around December to check out the actual beauty..

Short and crisp.

It was a good read.

Looks like everyone in ID are driving to Chikmagalur.

Even I planned but dropped out due to high accommodation pricing.

Man your Compass looks fantastic in that misty background, nice color. 😍

Thanks Shiva... it was indeed a good drive.

Pricing wise at chikmangalur it was around 1700 per night inclusive of breakfast for 2.

As @Ranger had mentioned in his drive at the peak of you take a home stay you end up with that much... but more people then would be cheaper per head for home stay.

Now that you are saying 50%, it pretty much sounds like an adventure to me :D. How did you manage getting out of it then ? 😮

Yes, December should be the perfect time to do this trip of yours. Very cool weather, no rain and greenery all around. Try staying in some good resort amidst the forest. It should be quite an experience :)

Beautiful log.

Love those beach pictures.
It looks very clean and less crowded.

I can see rain in each and every picture.
You must have enjoyed the drive in Compass.

Chikmagalur has many tails to explore, which can be done in 4x2.

Clouds definitely spoil the view points in Chikmagalur.

When we visited Babu Budangiri, visibility is zero.
We sat in the car and waited for  an hour.
Luckily clouds opened up and we had a good view for two hours.

Now that you are saying 50%, it pretty much sounds like an adventure to me :D. How did you manage getting out of it then ? 😮

Extra acceleration ,placed some dry stuff behind the wheels , since in 4x2 the power is sent to the front wheels somehow I managed by moving turning around the steering , reversing ... took sometime though ... but yes lesson learnt to carry something along when I land in such situations ... I was very worried what if my revving up that way burn the clutch plates ...

Actual adventure I had was when I had to turn back from mullayangiri... the muddy road towards the end had loosened up ... huh got the scare of my life ... got down cleaned the reverse camera and just prayed ... there were too many slippages on the concrete turf like indica, swift... one fortuner actually stank the place up with burning clutch smell ..

We missed each other by a week.

Nice write-up.

We planned to continue to till Goa, but time constraints pulled us back.

Compass in red looks awesome.

I'm waiting for Compass Automatic from the past three months.

Hope they will release a regular Automatic in 4wd, since I'm not interested in trail hawk edition.

Did you face any issues with the car or service?

How did it perform on bad roads? Want to know the ride quality.

During our drive to Muliyangiri, we found few of the cleared land slides.

We had tough time negotiating the cleared land slides.

I guess those happened during your drive. Scary experience!

Love those beach pictures.
It looks very clean and less crowded.

That’s the beach in kumta ... amazing it was ... could have stayed forever there... I’m getting visuals of it now while typing ... miss that beach ...

Though I loved the compass personally I felt I was not using the complete capabilities of 4x2... I was kind of concerned what if something goes wrong with the vehicle 🤦🏼‍♂️..

Yes, December should be the perfect time to do this trip of yours. Very cool weather, no rain and greenery all around. Try staying in some good resort amidst the forest. It should be quite an experience :)

Yea after seeing @Ranger chikmangalur details  I actually felt if we went to the same place or different places 😂... in just 1 week the place completely transformed ... that is how nature is I believe ..

Thanks @RajG... ideally they should have launched the regular Deisel automatic by now but with the kind of sales they are getting now I doubt if they would anytime soon ... but except for pricing ( I felt it was quite high)

of trailhawk is there any other major concern for not going with this ? For me I did not like what they did to the bonnet and I am not a fan of dual color tone (roof).

Issues faced so far(6k done)

- Rattling sound from the dashboard.

-Small sounds from doors

-Burnt clutch smell when I had gone to Birla mandir and yet again it was raining and the roads were slippery to the top.

-After this chikmangalur trip once I reached the city when reversing there some creaking noise.

Solutions and service :

-They upgraded the software for the rattling sound which solved the issue for a week or so but when I throttle I still got it for which they had removed the dash completely and tweaked something (which they are not telling me).Vehicle came back from its first service yesterday night so in the next two days I would know if they issue was resolved or not .

-Other sounds they solved it but since these are all minor issues I expect them to come back at a later stage.

-Clutch issue was found in several vehicles and they replaced it at free cost.

http://madrives.com/compass-headache-jeep-compass-problems-service-issues-engine-body-quality/

-Servicing till now has been hassle free.

- Ride quality is simple superb. The suspension is awesome when turning at high speeds. I loved the way it drove on the ghats.Steering is a bit heavy considering Deisel engine. Build quality I can confidently say the best in current market .while reversing at mangalore rains I hit a concrete pole as I could not see it either in the reverse camera or side mirrors or rear view due to rains and mud.Nothing happened at all but parts of the concrete fell from the pole ( probably it was already weak).

- the only stretch I felt irritated was the pathetic roads before gangavathi and near Bellary but the vehicle did well .

      Hello fellow enthusiasts,

      From last couple of month I have been planning a road trip from Hyderabad to Goa. Though I been to Goa last December for the new year celebration, but somehow google maps messed up the whole  trip and at some point of time I was driving on badly paved 8 feet wide road in some jungle which google considered the fastest(Google should also have an option to select 'Safe Roads'). Another issue I faced was the love of Karnataka for Speed breakers. So this time I am very much aware to be on the best route possible to avoid any such incidents. Some research online and on other forums yields the below routes.

      Hyderabad - Goa
      Route 1
      Gachibowli -> Zaheerabad -> Humnabad -> Gulbarg -> Vijaypura -> Bagalkot -> Belgavi -> Baga

      Route 2
      Gachibowli -> Deosugur -> Raichur -> Bagalkot -> Belgavi -> Baga

      Route 3
      Gachibowli -> Pargi -> Mudhol -> Shahabad -> Jevargi -> Sindagi -> Bagalkot -> Belgavi -> Baga

      Which is the best route in terms of road condition at present? I hope to have better knowledge before I leave for Goa this time.

      Also I want to know any Route via Maharashtra is suitable? If If after Vijayapura I can drive into Maharashtra and then to Goa.

      Route 4
      Hyderabad --> Jadcherla --> Raichur --> Lingsugur --> Mudgal --> Hungund  --> Bagalkot --> Belgavi --> Kanakumbi --> Bicholim --> Baga (Goa)

      Please Suggest. Thanks in advance.

      "Lost and alone on some forgotten highway - Travelled by many, remembered by few"
      Every December, it has become a ritual for us to go an long drive over 4000 kilometers. This year after multiple discussions and drop outs, every one agreed to drive down South.
      For me it is always the drive that matters and I was never particular about the destination.
      No matter where we go, our ultimate goal is to end up in Goa to celebrate new year.

      Day 1: Hyderabad to Chickmagaluru
      Day 2: Chickmagaluru local sight seeing
      Day 3: Chickmagaluru to Gokarna to Goa
      Day 4 : Goa
      Day 5 : Goa
      Day 6 : Goa to Hyderabad.

      We split into two teams in two cars. Creta and Polo.
