NAM both ways

Nam express way is a better option compared to Kadapa route.

Naidupeta to Tirupati is excellent 2 lane road. Traffic might be there otherwise its very good road. Nothing to worry

Reaching Tirupati by 3PM is tough unless you push yourself.

Reached at 2:30 PM. Started at 6:40 AM from Gachibowli, took NAM and then Gudur - Tirupati route. First 30 odd kms on Gudur - Tirupati was bad but loved putting my Hexa through it and it did perform very well. Post that the road was a breeze.

Sure will do so in the return journey. Didn't click any during the onward journey, reaching Tirupati before 3 PM was high on my agenda.

Thanks all for the inputs. Tried out the Kadapa - Kurnool route in the return journey.

Started at 10:30 AM from the Tirupati Airport and reached Gachibowli around 6:30 PM.

Road condition update:

  • Tirupati to Koduru (45 kms): Average road with few bad stretches and some unmarked speed breakers. (drive will be good as it goes through a forest range)
  • Koduru to Rajampet (38 kms): Bad roads with lots of potholes and many unmarked speed breakers.
  • Rajampet to Kadapa (55 kms): Mix of average and bad roads. Nothing alarming though.
  • Kadapa to Nandyal (130 kms): Beautiful 4 track toll road till you approach Nandyal and that's where the worst part begins.
  • Nandyal to Kurnool (75 kms): Pathetic would be an understatement. There is almost a 60 km stretch just before Nandyal and after the town (till Panyam) where a proper road is missing. Its a mess and quite bad. But again gave me an opportunity to appreciate my Hexa more :-) Beast just muscled itself through. It gets a little better around Panyam - Orvakal
  • Kurnool to Hyderabad (210 kms): Very good (will not report on this as its been very well covered in this forum).

Overall a journey of 550 odd kms took me close to 8 hours. Will try and post a full travelogue in the next couple of days.

So what is your favorite pick between the two routes?
It has to be NAM. But the traffic on NAM was bad. Almost from Narketpally to Ongole it was always busy and that's a big negative for the route. Ongole to Gudur was a breeze.

I thought you would take NAM on both ways like mentioned, did you change your mind after one way Journey?
No specific reason, had the whole day just to drive so thought I can at least report on this road and moreover it was going to take me the same amount of time. Also, I had travelled through this route multiple times during 2011 - 14 so wanted to see the changes first hand :-)

Hi vinz,

I am planning for a trip at the end of November in my VW Polo.

Basically thinking for a night drive, starting from Hyderabad sometime by 5 P.M or 6 P.M and reaching Tirupati by 4 A.M.

So which route would you suggest for the night drive?

Thanks,

Baran

Hyderabad to Tirupati best route 2017:

Hyderabad --> Narketpally --> Mirayalaguda --> Piduguralla ---> Addanki --> Ongole--> Nellore --> Gudur -->Tirupati

Most of it 4-lane toll road.

Thanks for your suggestion Admin. Will go with this option, as I was very much confused on which route to go with, since it is going to be a night drive with my family.

Definitely take the NAM expressway. At that hour of the day don't risk by traveling through Nandyal.
There is a Indian Oil COCO fuel station before Ongole (once you join the Kolkata - Chennai highway), you can fill up there. And considering the time of your travel, avoid the diversion at Gudur and take the one at Naidupeta.

I agree, plan your dinner stop properly. The ones mentioned are the only 2 good places to stop.

Not so great, one can drive on that road without any issue.

But NAM expressway is much better.

For low GC cars like Polo, NAM expressway is perfect.

It is 100% safe.
Keep an eye on cattle and stay dogs.
Very minimal food options between Narketpally and Ongole, plan accordingly.

Drive safe and all the best :)

As Ranger mentioned, yes it is very safe to travel by the NAM Expressway.

There won't be much of a trouble because of the cattle's or stray dogs.

I did my night drive for onward & return journey through the NAM Expressway in the end of November 2017.

Just that when you reach some towns, the roads are not good. But once you cross the towns, you will be back on the 4-way lane.

Before Ongole, when you are in the Vijayawada - Chennai highway, it is 6-way lane and it would be great to drive.

Yes, food options are minimal.

But, yes Gudur - Tirupati route is the one to watch for.

When you get diverted from the Vijayawada - Chennai highway towards Gudur - Tirupati route, to some extent the roads are very patchy. Often you would be changing your gears.

Then before 20 - 30 KM's of Tirupati, the roads are smooth even though it is 2-way lane.

Enjoy your ride and have a safe drive. :)

Trip planning started 6 months before and it kept on changing. Finally accommodation booked and trip scheduled on 24.Jan.2020.

Thanks to Ksk (Sathish) and Dishari for continuous guidance on route and stay.
      Car: Baleno ZETA CVT
Members: 4 Adults and 2 kids
Places visited: Gandikota & Belum caves. One can visit places like Owk reservoir, Yaganti temple, Orvakal
rock garden based on time availability.
      Route taken: Hyd-Kurnool-Nandyal-Gandikota-Belum caves-Banaganapali-Betamcherla-Kurnool-Hyd
      Road conditions:
                  - Hyd-Kurnool-Nandyal: Roads are good
                  -   Nandyal-Gandikota: Roads are good. 50 km before Gandikota roads are average to bad and
                     passes through villages.
      -  Gandikota-Belum caves-Banaganapali-Betamcherla-Kurnool : Roads are average and passes
through villages. Once you touch NH40 then roads are good.
      - Kurnool-Hyd: Roads are good.
      - Route map provided for ref.

      Distance traveled: ~ 800 KM
      Toll charges (Fastag): Rs. 650
      Petrol expanse: Rs. 3700
      Difficulties:
Trip was awesome, except Aarav (my son) fall sick on day of trip with viral fever. But throughout trip he supported us with his smile. The complete success of trip goes to him.

At Gandikota you need to wear good shoes to walk on rocks along with comfortable cloths.
Avoid it during summer & heavy rains.
People with breathing and BP related issues should avoid Belum caves.
      Stay option at Gandikota:
      Option 1: Non AC tents
Cost is Rs. 1000 per person with food on twin sharing basis.
The only problem is during rainy season this will not be good. Also for common washroom, you need to travel 500 m.
      Option 2: AC tents
Very costly around Rs. 3000 per person with food on twin sharing basis. Sometime even they charge Rs 3500. Tents without food charges will be Rs. 3000 on twin sharing basis.
      Need online booking via freakout.
      Washroom is attached to tent.
Opion 3: AC rooms at Hariths resorts
We found this good and reasonable. Per room cost is Rs 1600 from Mon-Wed and on Thur-Sun it will be Rs. 2000 (taxes extra).
Rooms are good and 500 m away from site.
Rooms being limited we need to book online via AP tourism website.
      Food options at Gandikota
Only food option is Haritha resort (if you have not booked tents). We found food is average and can be manageable. We have carried electric cooker and prepared food by our self.
      Food options at Belum caves
There is a small hotel available near to booking window. They serve cold drink, water and snacks.  We found food is average and can be manageable.

You can enjoy this trips in 2 days. I advise you to make it on weekdays as there will be less rush. For us it took 3 days as we are travelling with kids and we don’t want to drive in night and early mornings.
